Ancestors of Charles Allen Wilhelmson

First Generation

1. Charles Allen Wilhelmson,1 son of Lars Wilhelmson and Christina Larsson, was born on 4 Jul 1903 in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA,2 was baptized on 13 Oct 1903 in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA,3 died on 14 Sep 1978 in Salem, Polk, OR4 at age 75, and was buried on 15 Sep 1978 in Salem, Polk, OR.5 The cause of his death was congestive heart failure due to ASHD [ArterioSclerosis Heart Disease].

Biographcal Sketch: Charles Allen Wilhelmson was born on the 4th of July, 1903 in San Francisco, California. A birth certificate is not available since it was one of the many records lost to the fires that followed the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. He had a letter from the San Francisco Department of Public Health that certifies his birthdate and the destruction of the original records.

Sometime before 1910, he and his parents moved to 562 Pacific Avenue, Alameda, California. According to the 1910 US census, he was not attending school yet even though he was 6 years old. In May 1910, he and his parents traveled across the US to New York by train, then by ship to Sweden to visit his father's and possibly some of his mother's family and friends. In August 1910, they returned by ship and train to Alameda.

The following fall, when he was 7, Charlie started attending Longfellow School (elementary school) in Alameda, California. He attended Washington School (junior high school) from 1915 to 1917. Then attended Vocational High School in Oakland from April 1918 to June 1919 as a student machinist.

Charlie started his working career at age 16 as an machinist apprentice at Atlas Imperial Diesel Engine Co. and worked there from July 1919 to February 1922. He operated several of the machines in their plant and ended by being employed on the assembly floor. They wrote a recommendation for him speaking highly of his character and skills.

Charlie's father, Lars, died in December of 1921 when Charlie was 18 years old. After his father's death, Charlie found his mother at home cleaning out his father's papers. He said that he literally was taking things out of the wastebasket as his mother was throwing away family pictures, papers and memorabilia. In later years, he went through the items, labeling them very carefully. Sometime after 1962, he turned all the items and information over to his son, Donald Wilhelmson, with a letter to him stating that the responsibility for family history was being turned over to a new generation.

Charles Allen Wilhelmson married Selma Bertha Hovland March 2, 1927. They had the ceremony at her parents home in Oakland. After the wedding they moved to their home at 4158 Redding st in Oakland, California where they lived for over 25 years. Their 3 children were born between 1928 and 1930.

He had a wide variety of jobs for many different companies through the years: Union Machine works, growing and distributing mushrooms, IBM punchcard accountant at Federal Land Bank, Hartford Insurance Company, Lumberman's Mutual Casualty, Pacific Indemnity, Oliver United Filters, Holt Tool & Die, Dalmo Victor Company, a personnel supervisor for California State, and retired from Amvex Corporation in Redwood City.

In July 1945, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis in his left kidney and had it removed. In December 1945, he had his gall bladder removed and suffered a lung embolism as a result. After his gall bladder removal, he had a very low tolerance for fat in his diet giving rise to his meatloaf pan invention. This was 2 nested aluminum pans separated by 2 aluminum bars between them. The top pan had holes drilled into the bottom to allow the melted fat to drain into the bottom pan.

They owned some property in Santa Cruz where they planned to build a home. Charlie called it Rancho Lumbago, because 'it had a crick in the back.' Eventually, this property was sold.

Prior to his first heart attack in the early 1960s, they purchased property for retirement in Marysville, California. After that first heart attack, they sold the property because Charlie wanted to make sure that his wife was taken care of if he died first.

He had two more heart attacks in 1971 and 1972. After these heart attacks, he recovered enough so they could move to an apartment at Capitol Manor Continuing Care Retirement Community in Salem, Oregon in mid 1972. He suffered strokes in 1973 and 1975 after which he only walked with the aid of a walker.

Charlie died September 14, 1978 after another heart attack. He was buried in City View Cemetery in Salem, Oregon.

Charles married Selma Bertha Hovland,6 daughter of Andrew Thorsen Hovland and May Solomon, on 2 Mar 1927 in Oakland, Alameda, CA.7 Selma was born on 21 Feb 1907 in St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO8 and died on 5 Apr 1993 in Salem, Polk, OR9 at age 86. The cause of her death was heart arrest.

Children from this marriage were:

          i.  Donald Allen Wilhelmson was born on 20 Feb 1928 in Oakland, Alameda, CA11 and died on 2 Dec 2001 in Palo Alto, Santa Clara, CA12 at age 73. The cause of his death was stroke. Donald married Darthea Frances Fearing,13 daughter of Edward White Fearing and Sarah Randall Rix, on 29 Dec 1950 in Boston, , MA.1 Darthea was born on 2 Sep 1924 in Weymouth, Norfolk, MA,14 died on 6 May 1970 in Palo Alto, Santa Clara, CA15 at age 45, and was buried on 11 May 1970.16 The cause of her death was cancer.

ii.  Ellen Marie (Sue) Wilhelmson was born on 24 May 1929 in Alameda, Alameda, CA.11 Ellen married Gordon Boyd Cripe on 18 Feb 1956 in Chico, , CA.

iii.  Robert Charles (Bob) Wilhelmson was born on 12 Jun 1930 in Alameda, Alameda, CA.11 Robert married Joyce Johnson on 19 Jul 1952 in Chico, , CA. Joyce was born on 26 Aug 1934 in Minneapolis, , MN.

Second Generation (Parents)

2. Lars Wilhelmson,17 son of Per Wilhelm Larsson and Anna Christina Andersdotter, was born on 10 Jun 1868 in Lindesberg, Orebro, Sweden,18 died on 11 Dec 1921 in Oakland, Alameda, CA19 at age 53, and was buried on 13 Dec 1921 in Oakland, Alameda, CA.20 The cause of his death was arterial hypertension. Other names for Lars were Louie Wilhelmson and Louis Wilhelmson.

Biographcal Sketch: Lars Wilhelmson was born June 10, 1868 in Fornaboda, Lindesberg, Őrebro, Sweden to Per Wilhelm Larsson and Anna Christina Andersdottor. He was the youngest of 5 children. His wife always reported his birth as being in 1867 (which she put on his gravemarker), but Lars' Swedish birth records show he was born in 1868.

Professionally, he was called Louis Wilhelmson, but it seems his friends all called him Louie. His signature varied between Louis and Lars.

Lars was the 3rd of 4 children born to Per Vilhelm and Anna Larsson. The parents and siblings names are from his grandson's biographical narrative.

According to his grandson, Donald Wilhelmson, he lived for a time in Nyby, Sala, Sweden and Orebro, Sweden before emigrating to the United States. Lars had black hair which is unusual in a Swede. His passport application in 1910 states his hair was grayish.

Lars emigrated from Sweden July 10,1885. He traveled from Liverpool, England to New York on the ship Germanic. According to ship records the Germanic left Liverpool, England and arrived in New York February 2, 1885. It appears that the ship could cross the Atlantic in 6-9 days and made 1-2 round trips a month for many years.

It was probably shortly after arrival on the east coast of the United States that he was employed by Baldwin Locomotive Works and Crampton & Knolls. Donald Wilhelmson stated he remembered his grandfather worked at those companies and they are both located in New England.

In 1891, Lars made a visit to Sweden. No details about where or why he went have been found. According to family tradition, it was on the ship returning to the U.S. that he met Christine Larsson who was later to become his wife.

It wasn't until February 2, 1893 that Lars became a naturalized citizen of the United States. His passport application states he was naturalized in San Francisco. Because all naturalization records, along with birth, death and marriage records, prior to 1906 in that city were destroyed in the fires after the 1906 earthquake, it has not been possible to document this.

Lars Wilhelmson married Christine Larsson on June 10, 1895 in San Francisco. Once again, official records were destroyed in the 1906 disaster. They took up residence on Mission Street near 24th. An announcement in The San Francisco Call as well as their original marriage certificate both show this date.

According to his son Charles Wilhelmson, between 1892 and 1903, Lars worked in a desert town called Hedges in the Imperial valley installing machinery at the Tumco Mine. It is located in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains just east of the Salton Sea. It is not clear whether Lars worked there during the whole 11 years or just for some portion of those years. Either he came home for visits or the work was seasonal since there was a stillborn child born in 1896 and a son born in 1903.

Lars & Christina had one son, Charles Allen Wilhelmson born in 1903 while living at the Mission (near 24th) location. A year later, they moved to San Pedro, California where Lars installed engines in the ship Cabrillo and then was 'guarantee engineer' for the following year on its trips to Catalina Island.

Sometime between 1903 and the earthquake of 1906, Lars and his family moved back to San Francisco to 4731 Mission (between Persia Avenue and Russia Avenue). According to maps.google.com, there is an old style, two story building with living quarters above a store front that is between the addresses of 4728 and 4741.

After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the family moved across the San Francisco Bay to live at 562 Pacific Avenue in Alameda, California. According to a published account in the San Francisco Call, in 1908, Lars and Christine purchased a lot in San Francisco (in SE line of Mission street, 175 SW of Persia avenue, SW 25 by SE 83:6) for $10. Was this purchased as their home or possibly investment property since the Lars lived and worked in Alameda?

Lars worked at United Engineering Works in Alameda until the family took a trip to Sweden from May to August 1910. A diary that Lars kept of the trip exists, but it is written in Swedish and, apparently, is primarily cryptic notes. The only other record of the trip is a typed itinerary. They took 6 days by train to reach New York from Oakland. Then a week in New York before taking a ship for 11 days to reach Plymouth, England, then 6 stops in 4 days to reach Sweden. They made many stops in Sweden before leaving Stockholm on July 27. On the trip home, they traveled on the steamships Venus and Eldorado to reach Southampton, England. From there they took the steamship St. Paul 10 days to reach New York again. Another 7 days by train, and they arrived back home in Oakland.

After they returned from Sweden, they lived at 624 Haight Avenue in Alameda, about 2 1/2 blocks from their previous house. Just in time for World War I, Lars got a job with Hanlon Dry Dock & Ship Building and they moved to 1009 Fallon Street, Oakland. Lars spent the rest of his life working at Hanlon. He has many pictures of the building (which family tradition reports he designed) and machinery, some of which he designed and built. Pacific Marine Review has an article published in August 1920 which quotes D. J. Hanlon "Other notable assistants to whose names he constantly alluded were Mr. L. Wilhelmson, chief engineer, who designed many of the special tools built at the plant;..."

By 1920, Lars and Christine had moved to 1532 E. 14th street, again in Oakland. This was his last residence. He died suddenly on December 11, 1921 at home after being ill for a few days. The death certificate states arterial hypertension was the cause of death. Arterial hypertension is caused by reduced lung capacity which puts strain on the heart. There are several lung diseases associated with this.

His obituary as published in the Pacific Marine Review December 17, 1921 reads as follows:

Lars Wilhelmson, known all along the Pacific Coast as "Louis" died Sunday at his home in Oakland and was buried Tuesday. By birth he was a Swede but had lived most of his life on the Pacific Coast and attained a reputation for being the most exact estimator on ship repair work in this country. In addition to his ability he was a mechanical genius and made many inventions, some of which had much to do with the quick turning out of hulls when the war demanded ships. For several years Mr. Wilhelmson was with Dan Hanlon in charge of the machinery department. He had been ill for some months during the summer, but recovered and was over in San Francisco Saturday, apparently well and happy. His death means a sincere grief to hundreds of men who have worked with and under him and who learned something of the noble nature of the man as well as the mechanical genius which never had full recognition.

Lars married Christina Larsson 17 on 10 Jun 1895 in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA. Christina was born on 23 Sep 1866 in Alster, Varmland, Sweden,21 died on 12 Apr 1945 in Oakland, Alameda, CA22 at age 78, and was buried in 1945 in Oakland, Alameda, CA.23 The cause of her death was Cardiac hypertrophy; Hypertension; Dislocation of shoulder. Other names for Christina were Christina Larsdotter, Christine Larsson, and Kristine Larsson.

Children from this marriage were:

          i.  Male Wilhelmson was born in 1896 in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA and died in 1896 in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA.

1        ii.  Charles Allen Wilhelmson 1 (born on 4 Jul 1903 in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA - died on 14 Sep 1978 in Salem, Polk, OR). Charles married Selma Bertha Hovland 6 on 2 Mar 1927 in Oakland, Alameda, CA.7 Selma was born on 21 Feb 1907 in St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO8 and died on 5 Apr 1993 in Salem, Polk, OR9 at age 86. The cause of her death was heart arrest.

3. Christina Larsson,17 daughter of Lars Larsson and Stina Cajsa Jansdotter, was born on 23 Sep 1866 in Alster, Varmland, Sweden,21 died on 12 Apr 1945 in Oakland, Alameda, CA22 at age 78, and was buried in 1945 in Oakland, Alameda, CA.23 The cause of her death was Cardiac hypertrophy; Hypertension; Dislocation of shoulder. Other names for Christina were Christina Larsdotter, Christine Larsson, and Kristine Larsson.

Biographcal Sketch: Christina Larsson was born in Alster, Varmland, Sweden on September 23, 1866 to Lars Larsson and Stina Cajsa Jansdotter. She was the second of 5 children with 9 half-siblings from her father's second wife.

Her mother died when she was 6. Stories told to her family indicate she was mistreated by her stepmother and put out to work as drudgery maid at 13 yrs old. She reported that she was overworked, underfed and sickly. She told a story about shining shoes long after midnight, and being beaten when they found her asleep.

In 1884 she was employed by the Alexandersson family of Ostermalmsgaton #44, Stockholm, to care for their 2 sons. Their 3rd son was born in 1884. The 3 boys were: Adolf Axel Gerhard (b. 1877), Erik Alfred Gerhard (b. 1878), and Allan Robert Carl Gustaf (b. 1884). Correspondance between Christina and the youngest son was apparently treasured since it was saved and she had gotten rid of so many other pictures and letters.

In the 1890 Swedish census, the 2 parents, 3 boys and 7 household staff were listed at Ekensholm (their summer home). It was that census that lists Christina's last name as Larsdotter which would have followed the Swedish custom of naming children after their father's first name appending 'son' for the boys and 'dotter' for the girls.

Christine probably emigrated to the United States 1890-1891. The family tradition is that she met Lars Wilhelmson while he was returning to the US from his 1st visit back to Sweden. On board ship, 'she patched a hole in his coat pocket made when he accidentally put his still-burning pipe in it' .

A card, written in Swedish, from her sister Lovisa wishing her a Happy New Year 1891. It sounds like it was sent to the United States implying that she had already arrived before January 1, 1891.

In the 1910 census, Christine indicated she was naturalized in 1892 which would support the immigration in 1890-91. But in the 1920 Census she stated she immigrated in 1893 and was naturalized in 1895. If she were naturalized in San Francisco, her records would have been lost along with birth, death and marriage records prior to 1906 in the fires following the famous 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

When she arrived from Sweden she stayed with some friends in Brooklyn, New York, at Olson's Fuel, Feed and Moving Company on Bergan Street.

Lars Wilhelmson and Christine Larsson were married in San Francisco, California on June 10, 1895 by a Lutheran pastor. A wedding announcement copied from The San Francisco Call, June 11, 1895 reads "Wilhelmson -- Larson June 10, 1895 by the Rev. Dr. E. Nelander, Lars Wilhelmson and Kristin Larson, both of San Francisco." This is the first time recorded where her name was spelled with a 'K' instead of 'Ch' and her last name had only one 'S'.

According to family tradition, a year later their first child, a son was born and died at birth. Their second and last child, Charles Allen, was born 7 years later in 1903.

At the time of Charles birth, they lived on Mission Street near 24th Street in San Francisco. In December of 1908, there is a reference in The San Francisco Call (newspaper) to a piece of property being sold to 'Lars Wilhelmson and wife' near Mission Street and Persia Avenue in San Francisco for $10.

By the beginning of 1910 they were living in Alameda, California across the Bay from San Francisco on 562 Pacific Street.

The year 1910 was an eventful one. The family, (Lars, Christine, and son Charles) traveled to Sweden. They started their planning early in the year by applying for passports which were granted in April 1910. They were living at 562 Pacific Avinue in Alameda, California, but the passports were delivered across the bay to the Hamburg-American Line, 160 Powell St., San Francisco. In May they traveled from Oakland, California by train to New York in 5 days. They left Hoboken (it is assumed it is Hoboken NY since the train left them there) on the 18th. It was a 10 day trip on the ship Graf Waldersee of the Hamburg American Line to Plymouth, England. Another 5 days to Malmo, Sweden. They spent June and July visiting family and friends before leaving at the beginning of August for the return trip arriving back at Oakland on August 24, 1910. Their return trip was on the ship S.S. St. Paul.

By the 1920 census, they were iving at a house on 1532 East 14th Street in Oakland. A year later, her husband, Lars, died suddenly of a heart attack after being ill for a couple of months during the summer.

Christine lived in a couple of homes after his death. in 1930 she was living at 1908 22nd Avenue, in Oakland. In 1939, she was at 2241 East 11th Street, Oakland.

In the spring of 1945, Christine slipped on hardwood floors at home and dislocated her shoulder. The following day when she was at the doctor's office having it put back in place, she suffered a heart attack and died.

Her obituary appeared in the Oakland Tribune on April 13, 1945 ...
